During this time of economic upheaval and the cost of living crisis, homeowners are wondering how to reduce their energy bills now more than ever before.

Insulating a home is one of the best ways not just to reduce these monthly outgoings, but also to improve your home’s efficiency rating, something we should all be thinking about during the climate emergency.

Why is insulating a home important?

40% of our carbon footprint results from our homes (according to the Climate Change Committee) so aiming for more efficient, insulated homes is a great way to ‘do your bit’ in the efforts against climate change.

Heat leaks out of our homes through our walls, floors, windows and doors every minute, so the more insulated a home, the more efficient it is at retaining this heat, thereby using less energy to warm it. Not only is this lost heat poor for the environment (especially if your boiler is oil or gas-based), but this is also money which is literally seeping away from homeowners.

On the other side of the coin, the summer of 2022 was record-breaking with incredible temperature highs leaving many homes unable to regulate the temperatures. Insulating a home also helps to keep rooms cool and healthy inside.

What are the options?

The government is encouraging homeowners to replace their gas boilers with more sustainable heat pumps. Heat pumps can reduce energy bills by 26% but these alternatives work best with more energy-efficient homes, due to the lower flow temperature. Tackling inefficient houses as holistic projects is the best way forward.

Spray foam insulation is a modern alternative to traditional internal insulation which can be applied to walls quickly and easily by professionals, providing high U-values and high performance energy efficiency. A recent study found that spray foam insulation can save homeowners up to 56% on energy bills, compared with uninsulated houses.
